COMMERCE -- East Jackson ended its 16-game losing streak with a thrilling 14-10, come-from-behind win over Banks County Friday night in both teams' season openers.

The Eagles got an 8-yard touchdown pass from Cody Hardwick to Tyreek Shelton with 26 seconds left in the game to take the lead. The score capped a 60-yard drive in the final three minutes.

But the Leopards gave East Jackson a scare when they got a long play down to the Eagles' 15 as time expired.

First-year coach Gary Hughes it was a little more exciting than he was hoping for.

"(The Banks County) guy just kept breaking tackles and then he got an opening and we were fortunate to be able to run him down," Hughes said. "We knew it wouldn't be easy but we felt like we had a chance. To break the streak is huge for us. It's a great way to start the season and hopefully this will give the kids some confidence."

East Jackson led 7-0 at halftime on a 15-yard TD pass from Hardwick to Cody Reed in the second quarter.

Banks County quarterback Noah Trebec tied the game at 7-7 on a scoring run in the third quarter and the Leopards would grab a 10-7 lead in the fourth quarter on a field goal by Adan Gonzalez.
