GAINESVILLE - GHS drum major Ariana Olalde was recently selected as the 2013 recipient of the Roger L. Dancz Young Conductor Award from the University of Georgia. This prestigious award is given to a young musician who "possesses and demonstrates outstanding leadership and ability," and is given every year to one member of the UGA Drum Major Camp.

Typically, the award is given to the winner of a camp-wide conducting competition; however, this year, the award was based on improvement and how well participants led their peers the duration of the camp.

"Ariana is very well deserving of this honor, and is the first recipient ever from the Hall County and Gainesville area," states GHS band director Larry Miller.

As the award recipient, Ariana received a certificate, UGA football tickets, and the chance to conduct the UGA Redcoat Band during pregame at the UGA-North Texas game on September 21 at Sanford Stadium in Athens.
