CUMMING - Another telephone scam has popped up in the area. This time, it's happening in Forsyth County, where authorities say a man is posing as an officer with the Warrant Unit of the Sheriff's Office.

Forsyth County Sheriff's Deputy Doug Rainwater said the phone calls started over the weekend - five of them reported Saturday and five on Sunday. He said the caller identifies himself as Lt. Jonathan Baxley, badge number 8836. Then, said Rainwater, the caller tells the resident he has an arrest warrant for someone in the household for speeding on Georgia 400. He informs the resident that a video camera recorded the speeding incident.

"On one specific call he made, to the person answering the phone, he identified a family member," said Rainwater. "The way we look at it, you can go to Google right now and Google certain addresses...and in many cases you can find out...through Google searches who lives in a house."

As is the case with other such scams in the area, the caller demands payment for the speeding ticket with a credit or debit card, and he threatens the resident with an arrest if payment isn't made within 30 minutes. Rainwater said the caller demands an odd amount of money for the false citation.

"[He demands] $364, for instance," said Rainwater.

Rainwater said he does not believe any of the 10 people contacted actually gave the caller credit or debit card numbers.

Investigators are trying to determine if there is a link between other phone scams that have taken place recently in the Alpharetta and Roswell areas.

Rainwater encourages other residents who might have received phone calls to contact the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office at 770-781-2222.

"We need to get as much information about this person as we can, so that we can
find him, so that we can stop him," said Rainwater.
