Rabun County Library faces budgets cuts, seeks support for upcoming commission meeting

CLAYTON - The Rabun County Library received some disappointing news with the upcoming budget for the fiscal year.

The budget cuts from last year will remain in place, leaving the library with two options: no new materials and no programming or close for one or more full days a week.

Library staff are encouraging library supporters to attend a public county commissioner meeting held this Thursday at 6 pm. The meeting, at the Rabun County Courthouse, will give supporters a chance to speak out against the cuts.

Otherwise, the budget will be readopted July 30 and the cuts will go into effect August 1.

Cutting new materials will include everything but books: magazines, music, audio books and DVDs won't hit the shelves; the programming, such as the Wednesday Matinee, will cease. Closing for at least one day a week means the staff takes most of the financial burden, with the cuts directly impacting payroll expenses.
