Fire destroys boat, damages dock at marina

FLOWERY BRANCH - Hall County's Fire Marshal said a late-morning fire at Aqualand Marina in Flowery Branch destroyed a boat and damaged the dock and adjacent boat Tuesday.

According to Scott Cagle, the owner had just docked the 1973 36 ft. cabin cruiser when he and another person on board smelled smoke. Cagle said they heard a noise coming from below, but within the boat itself. They escaped injury.

Firefighters ran lines on to C dock at the marina to fight the blaze.

"Today (Tuesday) we were lucky with the wind and lucky that it was closer to the shore than fires have been in the past," Cagle said.

He said the cabin cruiser was valued at about $6000.

About 75 percent of the adjacent boat was damaged, according to Cagle.

"We saw that it was a 22 foot Sea Ray and a much newer boat. We don't have a dollar estimate on that yet just because we can't get a hold of the owner."

The amount of damage to the dock was placed at around $2000, according to Cagle.

As far as the cause, he said it appeared to be mechanical.

"Exactly what it is, we'll probably leave it undetermined, because of the amount of damage. There's probably going to be no way the investigator will determine exactly where the cause was."
