GAINESVILLE - Over the past weekend, Odyssey of the Mind (OM) teams from the World Language Academy (WLA) and C.W. Davis Middle School (DMS) competed in the Odyssey of the Mind 2013 World Finals held on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing Michigan.

The teams went head-to-head against teams from all over the world. After the competition was completed among the 825 participating national and international teams, C.W. Davis was ranked #2 in the World Finals in their division and WLA came away ranked #3 in theirs.

Although they finished in 2nd Place in their division of problem 4 "Tumble Wood" to 1st Place China, the Davis Middle team actually recorded higher final scores in 3 out of the four scoring categories, finishing only 4 points behind China once all scores were tallied. Davis received the top score in Style and Long-term for their amazing performance and props (their structure held 865lbs). In addition, the team received 98.67 in the Spontaneous competition. Finally, The C. W. Davis Middle team also received Gold Medals, 1 of only 5 teams selected for the highest award given in Odyssey of the Mind for Creativity. The Davis team is comprised of 8th graders Jordan Keller, Michaela Stubbs, and Ali Winiesdorffer; 7th graders Mac Arendall, Hannah Lee, Emily Shewbert, and Misa Suh. The team is coached by Kim Carroll ([email protected]).

World Language Academy Odyssey of the Mind Team competed in problem 2, "The Email Must Go Through." In this problem, the students created and presented an original performance that includes a technical representation of messages being sent by email. A Sender character sent three emails: one that required a return receipt, one with a work of art as an attachment, and one that traveled through a SPAM filter. Two of the emails went to a Receiver character and another went to an offbeat location. Each email will passed through a central server before reaching its final destination. Team members were not allowed to touch the emails while the server is processing the messages. The World Language Academy team is comprised of 5th graders Kennedy Turpin, Lydia Ebbs, and Sarah Katherine Willard; 4th graders Zoey Blankenship, Sofia Moreno, and Julliana Velaj. The team is coached by Darcy and Aaron Turpin ([email protected]).
