CUMMING - A woman who was walking along Highway 9 (Atlanta Highway) at 4 a.m. Tuesday was struck by a minivan and critically injured, according to Forsyth County authorities.

Sheriff's Deputy Courtney Spriggs identified the woman who was hit as Lelia Arroyo, 53, of Park Place in Cumming. Spriggs said Arroyo suffered a number of injuries.

"She has multiple broken bones, some internal injuries, possible head injuries," said Spriggs.

Arroyo is listed in grave condition at North Fulton Hospital.

Traffic investigators said they were unsure why Arroyo was walking along the highway near Bethelview Road at such an early hour. The driver of the vehicle that struck Arroyo did stop to help her. Spriggs said no charges have been filed at this time.
