David Massey was 74.
Massey devoted his entire professional life to education, starting his career as an English and Reading middle school teacher in Summerville, Georgia, and ending it with his retirement in 2003 as Associate Superintendent for Instruction and Assessment in the Hall County School System. In between, he taught reading in middle school in the Gainesville City School System and was later Director of Reading there for a number of years. He become Director of Reading for the Hall County School System in 1974 and served the system later as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Planning. He also served for a time as interim Superintendent.
During his career, Massey traveled the state for the Southern Accrediting Association of Colleges and Schools, working to help school systems become accredited.
He was Past President of the Lanier Hall Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow in Rotary International. He was a member of Gainesville First United Methodist Church and was on the first board of directors for the Methodist preschool.
A celebration of his life will be held at Gainesville First United Methodist Church at 11:00 Saturday.
