CLEVELAND - The Georgia State Patrol has released more information about a wreck that seriously injured a former White County football standout and current safety for the University of Kentucky early Saturday.

The single-vehicle wreck on Town Creek Road near Abb Helton Road happened around 4 a.m. Saturday. State troopers say the accident involved a 2008 Nissan Altima that traveled off the roadway, overturned several times, and ejected the driver, Ashley Lowery, some 100 feet from where the vehicle came to rest, said Sgt. 1st Class Chad Johnson of GSP Post 6 in Gainesville.

The 20-year-old Lowery, was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center by ambulance after medical helicopters were unable to fly due to weather.

Lowery, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was listed in serious condition in the intensive care unit, Johnson said.

"It's not known yet as to why he traveled off the roadway," Johnson said.

The Georgia State Patrol continued its on-scene investigation at 5:38 a.m., with traffic being diverted in the area at that time.

The investigation is continuing.
