GAINESVILLE - All of the festivals and other outdoor springtime events taking place this weekend are just a prelude to what has become one of the largest such events in the Gainesville area: the Spring Chicken Festival.

The 2013 edition is scheduled next Saturday in downtown Gainesville from 10:00-4:00. Things will really get going at 10:30 with the Chicken City Parade, the annual chicken cook-off, live entertainment, quilt show and kids zone.

The cook off consists of two divisions: Professional and Backyard Bar-B-Q. Prizes will be awarded in both
categories. The Grand Champion will receive $700 and have possession of the Chicken City Cup for one year.

The parade will include floats, vintage cars, and more and the route will include the downtown square.

New to the festival this year will be the "Re-Hatched" an upcycled/recycled art/craft market. There will be artists featuring creations made from recycled or repurposed materials.
