Tennis: Chestatee girls finish third, boys fourth at 8-AAAA tourney

DANIELSVILLE -- The Chestatee girls finished third and the boys took fourth at the Region 8-AAAA tennis tournament at Madison County High School Thursday.

The Lady War Eagles lost 3-0 to Lanier in the semifinals but rebounded with a 3-0 sweep of Stephens County in the consolation match.

Chestatee's Fernanda Arcaraz scored the first point with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles. The Lady War Eagles then secured the team victory by sweeping the doubles matches as Haley King and Grace Brown won at No. 1, 6-1, 6-3 and Lauren McNitt and Carolina Gijon cruised 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2.

Chestatee will be the No. 3 seed in next week's state tournament and travel to Columbus, the No. 2 seed from Region 5-AAAA.

Stephens County will travel to 5-AAAA champion LaGrange.

The Chestatee boys dropped into the consolation round after falling 3-0 to Madison County in the semifinals.

The War Eagles then dropped a close 3-2 match to Stephens County after the Indians rallied from being down 2-0 in the match.

Chestatee started strong by sweeping the doubles matches with straight set wins as Blaine Brown and Juan Carrion won 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 1 and Reed Johnson and Tyler Burgess once again did quick work at No. 2 winning 6-1, 6-1.

Stephens County countered by picking up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles as Steven Whitworth came from a set down to defeat Jeremiah Reed, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 and Brett Williams edged Teddy Werner 6-4, 6-4.

With the teams tied 2-2 and the No. 1 singles match tied at a set apiece, between Chestatee's Johnathan Cook and Stephens County's Austin Simmons.

Simmons would win the third set for a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 victory to knock Chestatee into the fourth spot.

Chestatee will travel to Carrollton, the No. 1 seed from Region 5-AAAA, while Stephens County visits 5-AAAA No. 2 Columbus.
