Track: Chestatee, Lumpkin girls go strong on day one of 8-AAAA meet

SUGAR HILL -- The Lumpkin County and Chestatee High girls impressed on day one of the Region 8-AAAA track and field championships on Monday in Sugar Hill, as each team picked up gold medals.

The Lady Indians corralled two victories, as Sydney Kinard claimed the triple jump (34-feet-11) and Kele Howerton won the pole vault (6-6).

Meanwhile, the Chestatee girls dominated the 1,600 meters, as Tori Mullinax edged out teammate Sarah Beth English for first place, crossing the finish like in 5:40.67 -- to English's 5:40.70.

Their finishes helped the Lady Indians to climb into second place on day one of the meet. Chestatee was just behind in third. Host Lanier held the lead.

Chestatee's Kristin Moroz was third in the high jump (5-0), while Taylor Diegrepont was second in the pole vault (5-6). The War Eagles' Logan Brock was second in the boys 1,600 (4:53.20), while Nigel Brooks was third in the pole vault (11-0), just ahead of Johnson's Juan Soto.

Stephens County's Charity Major won the shot put with a throw of 34-4, while Lumpkin's Emily Garner was second (33-3). The Lady Indians' Sydney Sanford was also fourth in the high jump (4-8).

The meet will resume at noon Wednesday at Lanier High.
