UNDATED - A Dahlonega man was killed, another man was airlifted from the scene and a state trooper was injured in a crash in Lumpkin County Tuesday night.

It happened around 10:30 p.m. on Highway 9 between Rider and Castleberry Bridge Road, according to Gordy Wright with the Georgia State Patrol.

Wright said Steven Brent Waters, 33, was killed when he crossed the center line of the highway and was hit by an oncoming pickup truck.

"A 1998 BMW540i was traveling southbound, had passed a vehicle in a no passing zone, entered a curve at a high rate of speed, crossed the southbound lane into the northbound lane broadside," said Wright.

The driver of the pickup truck, Chris Howard Christie, 34, of Dahlonega was taken by air ambulance to Gwinnett Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. There was no word on his medical condition.

Wright said the trooper became involved in the crash because he had seen Waters tailgating another vehicle and driving aggressively on Highway 9. That trooper, traveling northbound, turned around to make a traffic stop and ran up on the initial accident.

Wright said the trooper was unable to stop and hit the BMW, which was already in flames. Wright said the impact of the second collision was not severe. The trooper was taken to Chestatee Regional Hospital in Dahlonega where he was treated for injuries and released.

Wright said no charges will be filed, since the at-fault party was killed in the crash.
