COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) -- A 900-foot stretch of the Chattahoochee River's bank has dropped significantly and in places completely collapsed into the river in Columbus.

The collapse threatens more than 300 feet of the RiverWalk -- a walking path along the Chattahoochee -- and also some Georgia Power transmission towers. No injuries were reported.

The collapsed section is just north of City Mills Dam, where work continues in preparation for the May 25 opening of a whitewater course on the river.

Richard Bishop, president of Uptown Columbus Inc., said the collapse should have no effect on the opening of the whitewater course because the area where boats will be put in is well north of that stretch of river.
