Forecasters said the EF-2 tornado touched down around 6:10 p.m. in Meriwether County and traveled east into Pike County. National Weather Service forecasters in Peachtree City say the tornado had a top wind speed of about 120 mph and traveled about 13 miles.
Tornadoes range from EF-1 to EF-5 - which is the most severe. Officials say the tornado hit a primarily rural area, and thousands of trees toppled in the counties.
The tornado was part of a storm system that killed a man in northwest Georgia when a tree fell onto his truck.
Georgia Power officials say about 15,950 customers were still without service in 600 separate outages Tuesday afternoon.
