CUMMING - A Forsyth County man was killed over the weekend when he stepped in front of a vehicle on Canton Highway (Highway 20) near the Cherokee County line.

Forsyth County Sheriff's Office Deputy Doug Rainwater said 61-year-old Johnie Baker of Cumming died when he stepped off the curb and into the path of a van just before 7:30 a.m. Saturday.

"The driver of the Ford van was unable to come to a stop, but he did stop to try to render aid, and at that point he called 911," said Rainwater.

Rainwater said while the weather was cloudy and misty at the time, vehicles were visible. He said neither Baker nor the van driver were impaired in any way, and he said the sheriff's office does not anticipate filing charges.

The Saturday accident marked the third pedestrian fatality in the region for the week. Pedestrians were killed in two separate accidents in Gwinnett County on Tuesday and Thursday.
