BUFORD - The level of Lake Lanier has moved below summer full pool for the first time since spring and has remained there for most of the week.

The lake at mid-morning Thursday was 1070.89. Summertime full pool is 1071. The level reached that mark on April 13 and maintained at least a 1071 reading until Saturday when it dropped to 1070.97. It briefly moved back above 1071 on Monday but has remained below that level since then.

Its peak so far this year was 1073.64 on Aug. 25.

Typically, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers wants to see Lanier at summer full pool by May 1. Winter full pool is 1070.

The lake benefited from bountiful rains this spring and summer. During the traditional summer months of June, July and August alone nearly 28 inches of rain fell at the Gainesville airport.
