The name of Brenau's newest addition now has been in the works since she arrived in March of this year. The statue was commissioned and donated by Ike Belk specifically for Brenau. After a contest was held to name the tiger, Lucile was chosen, in honor of Lucile Townsend Pearce.
"Lucile - in memory of Lucile Townsend Pearce, 1883 to 1946," Brenau President Ed Schrader read as the plaque was presented. "First female executive and first lady of Brenau University."
The original Lucile was a Brenau student and married H.J. Pearce after his first wife passed. When H.J. passed away in 1943, Lucile and an executive committee ran the college until Josiah Crudup was named president in 1945.
The ceremony featured a ribbon cutting in honor of Lucile Pearce and her newly named tiger. President Schrader, the sculptor, Gregory Johnson and the Pearce's grandchildren cut the ribbon. The choir ensemble sang the alma mater following the ceremony and cake and punch were served as the drum line led everyone to the a reading of Dr. Jim Southerland's memoirs that followed the event.
"I think the name is really appropriate," said women's college junior Andi Eckardt. "It just really captures how much we embody tradition at Brenau."
