Lucy, a black lab mix, jumped out of her owner's truck a week ago at Banks Crossing in Commerce. Shane Wilson, who lost his leg in a motorcycle accident, had been desperately looking for his companion ever since.
Lucy had been seen in a number of different locations in the area, but no one was able to catch up with her until Tuesday.
Melissa Parr, a vet tech at the Commerce Veterinary Hospital, said two ladies brought Lucy to them Tuesday morning, after they saw her sitting alongside a guard rail on I-85 in the Banks Crossing area.
"They were eating over at Cracker Barrel and they saw a black dog that looked like she needed some help," said Parr. "She was stuck in the rain. They actually had to kind of drive around the fence and walk down 85 to get her out of the rain."
Turns out the Commerce Veterinary Hospital had already been a contact point for Lucy's family. In fact, they had had a few false alarms, but Tuesday morning's discovery was what they had been waiting for.
"As soon as she came in, we called and he [Shane Wilson] said 'Get her to sit down and tell her to speak,' and as soon as she did that and she barked...he heard it and he got so excited," said Parr.
Parr said Wilson offered Lucy's rescuers a $500 reward, but they refused. In fact, Parr said she didn't even know the ladies' names.
Needless to say, she said there were quite a few tears at Tuesday morning's reunion.
"We all just came up to the front [of the office], most of us had our cameras out, taking pictures...it was just wonderful."
