I was talking with a friend the other day about jobs and opportunities, and he said: in a quick two minutes what would you tell your grandkids? There are opportunities all over the place, I said. The business world is going through great change. And history shows any time there is great change, there is great opportunity. Look at 1880 to 1920. Electricity, the telephone, automobiles, airplanes, radio, on and on. Same thing now. Now we are moving headlong into the digital age, and everything is changing. Some of the old jobs will remain, but a lot are gone and more are going. It will not be enough to know things; you must also know how to do things. Your education will not end at graduation; that's when it will begin. Your problem is not a lack of opportunity. It is too many options, and you will have to pick one and become skilled in it. Despite all the unemployment, the U. S. has a shortage of skilled workers. Look beyond jobs that are popular and socially acceptable right now. For instance, look at natural gas; get in it early and grow up with it. Or food, become a farmer: grow chickens, produce wine. Become hi-tech savvy; that applies to everything. Try recycling, or taking care of us old folks. There are thousands of opportunities out there; pick one and go after it. Not later; right now. And finally, steer clear of jobs the government is messing around with. Go with UPS, not the Post Office. Opportunities? You bet your life. I would give body parts to be twenty-something and know what I now know about marketing. God Bless you, I would tell them, and have a prosperous New Year. <br />
