ATLANTA - Gov. Nathan Deal has selected state Rep. Christian Coomer as his House floor leader, replacing Doug Collins of Gainesville, who is giving up his seat in the state legislature in his quest for a seat in Congress.

The governor's floor leader is responsible for shepherding Deal's legislative agenda through the General Assembly.

Coomer said Thursday that he takes the assignment "very seriously."

A lawyer, Coomer represents that Cartersville area. The Republican lawmaker will join Deal's current team of floor leaders, which includes Rep. Amy Carter of Valdosta and Rep. Matt Hatchett of Dublin.

Collins won the Republican primary for the new 9th District congressional seat and will face Democrat Jody Cooley, also from Gainesville, in November's general election.
