Piedmont women's soccer falls 2-1 on the road

FERRUM, Va. -- The Piedmont College women's soccer team dominated the offensive end of the field but could not come up with the equalizing goal Saturday as the Lady Lions fell 2-1 at Ferrum College in the program's first-ever USA South Athletic Conference match. FC held a 2-0 lead at half and held off a late barrage of goals to secure the Panthers third victory of the season.<br />

Early goals by Casey Johnson and Megan Funck (assisted by Johnson) came just three minutes apart in the game's 24th and 27th minute to give FC a 2-0 lead at intermission.<br />
<br />
PC's Laura Goodwin cut the deficit in half in the 67th minute, and the Lady Lions continued to pepper the Ferrum goal but could not break through to even the score in the game's final period.<br />
<br />
Piedmont dominated the offensive end, outshooting Ferrum 26-8 and holding a decisive 10-4 advantage in corner kicks. <br />
<br />
The Piedmont women' rebounded Sunday with a decisive 4-0 victory at Warren Wilson College to earn a weekend road trip split. The victory ups the Lady Lions' overall record to 5-2. <br />
<br />
From the kickoff, Piedmont dominated the game and was finally able to break through with a header goal by Dilyn MacLean. MacLean's initial shot was saved by the WWC goalie but she was able to head home the rebound for the 1-0 lead, which would hold through the first half.<br />
<br />
In the game's 55th minute, Shayna Rogers made the score 2-0 on a top corner score from 20 yards out after Laura Goodwin set her up with the assist. <br />
<br />
Piedmont would add on a pair of insurance goals late in the game by Emily Corson (84th minute) and Nikki Means (89th minute). MacLean assisted Corson's goal, while Sarah Hill aided Means' goal with a cross.<br />
<br />
PC outshot the host Owls 30-6 and held a 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.<br />
<br />
In goal Michaela Garnder (75) and Alex Smith (15) minutes combined for the shutout.<br />
<br />
Piedmont will return to action next weekend when the team makes a weekend USA South swing with a Saturday match at William Peace University and a Sunday afternoon affair with Meredith College with, both games scheduled for 2 p.m. kickoffs in Raleigh, N.C.
