"I hit it really well and gave myself a lot of opportunities today, but my putting was the key," said Silvers, a former University of South Carolina standout. "You're going to have a lot of opportunities out here, but it all comes down to making the 10 to 12 foot putts. I was able to make them all today and it totaled up to 60."
After carding a 2-under 69 in the first round, Silvers started the second round T53 and got off to a meager start, shooting 1-under through four holes. Silvers, who has one victory on the NGA Tour this season, got things going with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 5 and 6 before finishing the front side with back-to-back birdies at Nos. 8 and 9 to make the turn in 30.
On the backside, Silvers recorded pars on the first two holes and then went on a tear, reeling off six birdies in a row. After reaching the final hole in regulation, Silvers had a birdie putt for a 59.
"It was a tough putt, back up the hill, right to left," said Silvers. "I had to hit it hard and I didn't want to leave it short. It got a little low on me, but I gave it a good run."
While he doesn't have a tournament record to his name, Evan Beirne of Jupiter, Fla., made some noise with a blemish-free 63 in the second round. The former St. John's standout, who opened with a 5-under 66, has yet to make a bogey in the first 36 holes and was tied for the lead at 13-under par when play was suspended on Friday night.
Patrick Wilkes-Krier of Orlando, Fla., carded an 8-under 63 in the first round and posted a 4-under 67 in the second round to move into third place at 12-under par.
Blaine Peffley (64), Hernan Piri Borja (68) and two-time 2012 winner David Skinns (66) finished their second rounds tied for fourth at 11-under par, while Bo Hoag (65) finished the day T7 at 10-under par.
Brandon Brown was unable to complete his second round, but his 10-under 61 in the first round leaves the Eastern Kentucky alumnus T7 on the leaderboard.
