Indians' third baseman Matt Hague led off the bottom of the 10th with a double to center off Braves' reliever Cole McCurry. Jeff Clement followed with a single to center putting runners on first and third, then the G-Braves walked Yamaico Navarro intentionally to load the bases. Fryer followed by sending a 1-2 McCurry pitch past Gwinnett third baseman Ruben Gotay with a drawn-in infield for the game winner.
The Indians forced extra innings with a run in the bottom of the ninth off G-Braves reliever Andy Russell. Trailing 4-3, Indianapolis' Jose Tabata stroked a one-out single to centerfield, stole second base and moved to third on a groundout. With two outs, Chase d'Arnaud ripped a double to left-center scoring Tabata from third with the tying run, moving the game to the 10th.
The game was preceded by a one 1:28 rain delay, and once re-started; it took until the third inning for the teams to score. In the top of that inning, Gotay was walked by Indians starter Justin Wilson and was then bunted to second by Gwinnett starting pitcher Julio Teheran. Jose Constanza poked a single to left that moved Gotay to third. The hit extended Constanza's Gwinnett record hitting streak to 22 games. Josh Wilson followed with a triple scoring both Gotay and Constanza for a 2-0 lead. Ernesto Mejia (20) then powered a two-run homer to left center putting the G-Braves up 4-0 after two and a half innings.
But for the second time in the series, the G-Braves squandered a 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the third, d'Arnaud led off with a double to left, moved to third on Teheran's balk, then scored on a groundout to short by Hague to cut the G-Braves' lead, 4-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, Clement led off with a single to left off Teheran and Navarro (5) hammered a two-run homer to left to cut the margin to 4-3. That score remained that way until the bottom of the ninth.
Teheran worked 6.0 innings in his 18th start of the season, as he allowed six hits including a home run and three earned runs with one walk and five strikeouts. Cory Gearrin, just off the disabled list and pitching for the first time since June 30, worked a scoreless seventh with one hit and one strikeout. Russell gave up two hits and one run in 2.0 innings and McCurry (L, 0-1) was credited with no innings pitched surrendering three hits, one earned run and one walk en route to his first loss with Gwinnett.
Wilson worked 4.0 innings for the Tribe, giving up four hits, four earned runs with four walks with six strikeouts and he also gave up one home run. Daniel McCutchen worked 2.0 scoreless innings with one hit and four strikeouts and Duke Welker also worked 2.0 scoreless with two hits and one strikeout. Evan Meek (W, 3-2) picked up the win with 2.0 scoreless innings, one hit, one walk and one strikeout.
Offensively for the G-Braves, Constanza was 2-for-4. His 22 game hitting streak is the longest in the International League since the record 43-game streak of Brandon Watson of Columbus in 2007. Wilson was 2-for-5 with two RBIs giving him nine RBIs in his last three games, and 10 on the eight-game road trip. Lance Zawadzki went 2-for-4 and Jordan Parraz was 1-for-4, hitting safely in his third-straight game. Mejia's homer was his only hit of the night in four trips to the plate, as he currently leads the G-Braves in home runs (20) and RBI (64).
The Indians were led by d'Arnaud and Clement, as each were 3-for-5. Hague was 2-for-4 and Navarro had two RBI, alongside his sixth inning homer and a 1-for-4 night.
The G-Braves return to Coolray Field Friday night to open a four-game series with the Empire State Yankees. Gwinnett Left-hander Jose Lugo (2-5, 5.02) will start against the Yankees right-hander John Maine (3-3, 6.28). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Julio Teheran Day and Superhero Night.
