Satellite bus stops, renovated GHS cafeteria ready for Gainesville school year

GAINESVILLE - Gainesville City School board members met Monday night, hearing plans for the upcoming school year.

Board members received a written update from Transportation Director Jerry Castleberry outlining plans to add morning pick-up from three satellite school bus stops in the city.

Castleberry said the school system tried the satellite drop-offs in the afternoon last year.

"It's worked well, but again, this is the first time we're doing morning stops," said Castleberry. "It's new to us, so a lot of planning has gone into it."

The goal of using the satellite locations is to alleviate traffic around elementary schools, and while originated to assist tuition students, Castleberry said the service is not limited to out-of-district students.

The satellite pick-up locations are at Lakewood Baptist Church, Green Street Pool parking lot and Estates Drive off Riverside Drive. Castleberry said parents will be able to get full details on the operation of the satellite stops at school open houses.

Castleberry estimated the 42 buses in the Gainesville City fleet transported will transport about 4,000 students this year.

GHS cafeteria boasts new look

Gainesville Director of School Nutrition Tiffany Lommel gave school board members a peek at the newly-renovated Gainesville High School cafeteria at the Monday night meeting.

Students won't get to see the finished product until the first day of school on August 10.

Lommel said she thinks students will be pleased to see how their input was incorporated into the renovation design.

The updated cafeteria, which is house in the oldest building on the GHS campus, has an increased capacity of 70, according to Lommel.

Cargill presents grant to GHS math/science department

The Cargill Cares Committee presented a check for $2500 to the Gainesville High School Math and Science Department Tuesday night. Anita Wheeler with Cargill made the presentation, long with a matching donation from the Cargill corporate office.
