GAINESVILLE - With the opening of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London just weeks away, the Northeast Georgia History Center is going back in time - to 1996 when Atlanta hosted the summer games.

Sunday, the history center will present Family Day: Southern-style Olympics, 1996 and Now

Gainesville served as the venue for rowing, canoe and kayak events at Clarks Bridge Park which has hosted several national and international events since the Olympics and is often used by college rowing teams from all over the country for training.

Other venues outside Atlanta that hosted Olympic events included Athens (soccer), Stone Mountain (bicycle racing), and Conyers (equestrian).

The history center will open at 1:00 Sunday.
