GAINESVILLE - This week the Gainesville City School Board extended the contract of Superintendent Dr. Merrianne Dyer an additional two years.

"2012 was the year I had planned to retire and the board was aware of that when I took the position in 2008," Dr. Dyer said.

"Recent events and the timing on new policy changes and the new accountability system coupled with the fact that we are building another school...we came to the conclusion we would extend the amount of time we would do the superintendent search," explained Dyer.

When asked if she could foresee using her contract extension as an opportunity to accomplish anything not yet accomplished, Dyer replied to the affirmative.

"Some of the things that have presented themselves that are most meaningful I never planned to do," Dyer said. "That's kind of like the way life is."

"When I became superintendent my number one charge was to stabilize financially the school system while keeping the academic progress on track."

Having done that, Dyer said that getting more students to graduate high school was a favorite target of hers.

"The opening of a non-traditional high school - Wood's Mill - that made it possible for more students to finish high school, and working with the Comprehensive Systems of Learning Support...that's been really rewarding and I look forward to doing those kind of things."

As for knowing that June 30th of this year would not be her final day at the helm: "It seemed to be the best thing for me and the board."
