Brenau softball moves one win away from title series in tourney

GULF SHORES, Ala. -- The Brenau University softball team moved one win from the championship contest on Monday at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics tournament in Gulf Shores, Ala.

The Golden Tigers blanked Auburn, Montgomery 4-0 to start the day and added an 8-4 win over Central Baptist (Ark.) in their second contest.

The outcomes kept Brenau in the winner's bracket, where they will face Shorter at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in Gulf Shores. The winner will move in to the championship series, while the loser will get stay alive in the double-elimination tournament.

Brenau jumped on Central Baptist with five runs in the first inning of Game 2. The Golden Tigers feasted on Central pitching, racking up 13 hits, including a home run, three total hits and three RBIs for Ellen Black. Sally Duggan also went 3-for-3 with an RBI in the win, while Jenny Shepard and Taylor Kelley provided two hits apiece. Katie Bolin also drove in two runs for Brenau.

Meanwhile Anna Maness pitched a complete game for Brenau, allowing just five hits and one earned run.

The Golden Tigers took advantage of two throwing errors and an RBI from Bolin to score all the runs it needed in the earlier victory Auburn, Montgomery.

Brenau scored two run in the first inning on a throwing error and a passed ball.

The Golden Tigers managed just five hits on the day, including an RBI double from Bolin, but that was all they needed thanks to Jenny Shepard's performance in the pitching circle.

Shepard allowed just two hits on the day, though she did walk six, and struck out five batters.
