Final arguments made in John Edwards trial

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Defense attorneys for John Edwards are saying in their closing arguments that the former presidential candidate committed sins but did not commit any crimes.

Lead defense attorney Abbe Lowell said Thursday during closing arguments that the government did not prove Edwards knowingly or intentionally violated campaign finance law. That's a key element that must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt to win a conviction.

Edwards is charged with six campaign finance violations. Prosecutors say he orchestrated a scheme to take about $1 million from two wealthy campaign donors to hide his pregnant mistress while he ran for the White House in 2008.

He faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted of all charges.

Jurors will begin deliberating Friday.
