MACON - North Hall High School senior Rachel Glazer was awarded first place in the Optimist International State Oratorical Competition, which was held in Macon over the weekend.

This is the fourth and final tier of the annual speech scholarship contest. Each year almost 5,000 Georgia middle and high school students write and deliver a 4- to 5-minute speech on a designated topic. This year the topic was "How my optimism helps me overcome obstacles."

Glazer, who plans to enroll in North Georgia College and State University's 2013 Honors Program, received a $2,500 scholarship.
