GAINESVILLE - Elementary school students in Hall County will have an updated curriculum for sexual abuse prevention when school begins in the fall.

Jim Sargent, the Director of Student Services, told Hall County school board members this past week that the "Speak Up Be Safe" program replaces the old "Good Touch Bad Touch" program. "Good Touch Bad Touch" is no longer being offered, according to Sargent, so the school system Sex Education Committee had to look for new curriculum.

He said the message in "Speak Up Be Safe" is similar to the older program, but it's been updated for the 21st century, since educators were still using VHS tapes to facilitate the program for students.

"It also has expanded the parent involvement and parent notification elements of that program," said Sargent.

Sargent said committee also liked the new program because it targets other personal safety issues for kids.

"It addresses issues like cyberbullying and other things that can imperil children," said Sargent.

Hall County 1st through 5th grade students will participate in the program.
