Jorge Quintana, a spokesman for Gwinnett County Schools, said they're expecting less than 700 new students this fall. That's a fraction of the more than 7 thousand new students Gwinnett County Schools saw in the fall of 2006.
"We attribute that to the economy and obviously the housing market," he said.
Quintana said speculation that a crackdown on immigration is part of the reason for the slowdown in growth is not valid.
"Since we are not allowed to ask for the immigration status for any of our students or their families, therefore we do not have the data to attribute that," he said.
Quintana said Gwinnett County Schools hasn't seen less than 1,000 new students in at least 30 years.
