CLEVELAND - Two people died following a two-vehicle head-on collision six miles north of Cleveland on Highway 129 Thursday afternoon. The male driver of each vehicle was pronounced dead on scene by White County Corner Ricky Barrett.

Barrett identified the victims as 55-year-old Walter Anthony Winkler and 29-year-old Caleb Joseph Higdon, both of Cleveland.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating, and according to preliminary information, the two vehicles collided on the shoulder of the southbound lane of the highway.

The accident happened at 5:00 p.m. and some White County volunteer firefighters were on scene almost immediately after the crash because they were on their way to Fire Station 6, which is located a quarter of a mile north of the accident scene, for their weekly meeting and training.
