Gwinnett School System makes tough budget decisions

SUWANEE - Gwinnett County's school district plans to eliminate some positions, increase class sizes and require two furlough days for most employees as it struggles with a budget shortfall.

The Gwinnett Daily Post reports that Gwinnett County Public Schools released the plans at a Thursday meeting about the budget.

School officials say the plan to deal with a projected $89 million shortfall includes eliminating 54 vacant central office positions. Among other measures, the plan would also increase class sizes by two students districtwide and continue two furlough days for all employees except bus drivers and school nutrition staff.

District spokesman Jorge Quintana said the budget is scheduled to be approved in May.
