WINDER - Teachers in the Barrow County School System may no longer have social network connections with students, unless the contact is tied specifically to classroom work.

The new rules have been put in place by Barrow Schools as part of the system's technology-use guidelines, according to published reports in the Athens-Banner Herald.

The school system and one of its teachers made national headlines two years ago when that teacher was forced to resign when school officials found out about a photo on her Facebook page in which she was seen holding two beers. Ashley Payne has sued the school system for wrongful terminination.

Under the new rules, students and teachers can only be connected online when the connections are part of a school-sanctioned educational program.
