A marked 2008 Dodge Charger owned by the Habersham County Sheriff's office and driven by Deputy John Brandon Patterson, 27, of Clarkesville attempted to stop a 2002 Honda Accord driven by a male on Highway 365 at Cody Road, but the driver failed to yield.
The pursuit left Highway 365 and continued onto Double Bridge Road, Ansley Road and Copper Springs Road, where the first wreck involving the Honda, driven by 39-year-old Stewart Daniel Norris of Anderson, S.C., occurred at 4:43 a.m.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, Patterson's vehicle, with its emergency
equipment activated, still was attempting to stop Norris' car at the cul-de-sac at the end of Copper Springs Road. The Honda driven by Norris struck the left front of Patterson's patrol car with its left front, causing the airbags in the patrol car to activate.
The Honda, which had been reported stolen in Morganton, N.C., then left the scene.
Patterson told the investigating trooper he was attempting to pin in the Honda at the time of the collision. Also during the wreck, the Honda knocked down a mailbox in the cul-de-sac.
Norris then again attempted to flee, this time from Demorest Police Officer Jamie Bowden on Ansley Road, Highway 197 and Briarcliff Trail, where a second wreck involving the Honda occurred, also at 4:43 a.m.
In an attempt to assist Bowden, Clarkesville Police Officer Kevin Heaton positioned his 2008 Dodge Charger, with its emergency equipment activated, to block Norris' vehicle in on Briarcliff Trail. The Honda struck the push bumper of Heaton's car and left the scene.
The pursuit continued onto Highway 197 and Cody Road, with the left tire off the rim of the Honda, officers said.
The chase ended on Cody Road, between Kinney Mill Road and Piney Woods Trail
