UNDATED - While the Georgia Department of Transportation mobilized in nine Northeast Georgia counties overnight, the winter weather did not create as much trouble as forecasters had anticipated.

Still, there was enough snow and sleet in some of the mountain counties to prompt four school systems in the are to delay opening by two hours. Dawson, Lumpkin, Towns and Union County schools held off on the opeing bell until they were sure roads in the higher elevations of those counties would be clear.

Turett-McConnell College in Cleveland also held off on holding classes until 10:00 Tuesday morning.

Teri Pope with the Georgia Department of Transportation said DOT crews remained on standby overnight in Banks, Dawson, Habersham, Lumpkin, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union and White counties. She said they demobilized by 10 a.m. Tuesday but will continue to be on standby until the the threat of winter weather is over.

SR 180 Spur in Towns County and the top one-third of SR 348/Richard Russell Scenic Parkway in Union and White Counties remained closed to prevent motorists from being caught in hazardous conditions. Pope said those roadways will reopen only after temperatures are well above freezing at their highest elevations.
