8-AAA tournament: Knights rally over War Eagles to advance

MONROE -- Johnson rallied past Chestatee, 77-71, Monday night in the first round of the Region 8-AAA boys basketball tournament at Monroe Area High school.

The Knights used a 14-2 run over the final 3:30 of the game erase a 69-63 Chestatee lead to advance to the 8-AAA quarterfinals.

The War Eagles led 19-13 after the first quarter but Johnson outscored Chestatee 23-14 in the second quarter to grab a 36-33 lead heading into halftime. The War Eagles came out firing in the third quarter outscoring the Knights 23-18 to reclaim the lead.

Montrell McKenzie led the Knights with 26 points, 17 rebounds, and five blocks. Matt Hollis added 24 points and Ty Odem had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds for Johnson.

Chestatee's Cole Morgan led all scorers with 28 points. Keelan Passmore scored 15 and Jordan Degraff added 12 for the War Eagles.

Johnson moves on to face Walnut Grove at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Walnut Grove.

Chestatee's season is now complete.
