Boys basketball: Red Elephants rumble over Monroe Area

MONROE -- The Gainesville boys basketball team wrapped its regular season in style on Tuesday, overpowering Monroe Area 78-55 in Monroe.

The Red Elephants (16-9, 10-2 Region 8B-AAA) inched ahead 16-14 after the first quarter and 38-31 at halftime before storming out of the locker room for a 62-42 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

Shaquan Cantrell paced Gainesville with 18 points, while Chase England scored 11. Ty Brown also added 10 for the visitors, and Caleb Hayman scored nine.

Ken Jackson scored a game-high 32 to pace Monroe Area. Darius Blackwell also scored 12.

The Red Elephants will next play in the Region 8-AAA tournament, which will commence on Monday.
