GAINESVILLE -- The Gainesville girls trailed just 6-4 at the end of the first quarter but turnovers and poor shooting undid the Lady Elephants in a 36-23 loss to Franklin County Thursday in the Big Red Shootout at the Gainesville gym.

Gainesville (4-5) finished with more turnovers (25) than points and did not score more than 10 points in any quarter. The Lady Lions (7-4) were not much sharper finishing with 22 turnovers for the game.

At one point in the third quarter, the two teams had more combined turnovers than points. But Franklin County finally found some offense in the second half when Autumn Brooks and Abby Hunter had a nice inside-out game going.

The two combined for all 12 points and three assists in a 12-4 run in the third and fourth quarters to pull away for a 28-13 lead. Gainesville would only get as close as 12 points the rest of the way.

Hunter would finish with 16 points and Brooks 15 to lead the Lady Lions, who advanced to play Class AAAAAA powerhouse Parkview on Friday in the semifinals.

Anna Walker finished with 10 points and four rebounds to lead Gainesville.

In other action Thursday in the girls bracket of the Big Red Shootout, Parkview advanced with a 97-7 win over Johnson. The Lady Panthers (11-0) opened the game with a 25-0 run and then cruised to the win.

Parkview led 37-3 after the first quarter and 64-5 at halftime and outscored Johnson 18-2 in the third quarter.

Ariel Collins led Johnson with three points for Johnson on a first quarter 3-pointer to stop the initial Parkview run.

Chattahoochee moved into the semifinals with a 59-42 win over Dacula.

Jackson County was the only area girls team to advance Thursday with a win over Cambridge in the first game of the day.

Chattahoochee and Jackson County will face each other in the other semifinal matchup on Friday.
