When the medals were awarded for the Bench-Only class Friday, the American lifters came home with three championships and two runners-up places and some world records. The USA is expected to pick up more championships and records when the awards for the first day of full-power are officially handed out Saturday.
Leading the way for the Americans was IronDawg Dana Tripp of Grayson. Tripp broke her own world mark on her second lift before breaking it again on her third with a press of 43 kilograms or a little less than 95 pounds to take the gold medal in the Master's Women´s 40-44 year old 52 kg/114.64-pound class.
Husband Russ Tripp broke an American record and finished second at the meet with his press of 147.5 kg/325.18 pounds in the Master´s men´s 45-49 year old 75 kilo/165.35 pounds. class. Winterville's Andy Williamson also took silver in the MM 45-49 year old 110 kg/242.51 pounds. classification with a lift of 150 kg/ 330.69 pounds.
Also taking gold were IronDawgs Uwe Thormann of Palm Harbor, Fla., and Oakwood´s R. Garry Glenn. "To tell you the truth, I'm really surprised they gave that one to me, but that's not my decision. I was still trying to push it to lock and felt I had at least started to stall. I heard the 'rack' command and the judges gave me three white lights! My left arm is a little shorter than my right and apparently they felt I had locked both arms out," Glenn said. "Oh well, I've had a call or two go the other way as well. I tried a personal record (PR) of 342 and change on my third lift but was out of gas and missed. We've met some really nice people on this trip and had some good times. We hope our full power team can do even better. They got off to a great start today."
Glenn is a 1972 honor graduate of Jefferson High in Jefferson, Ga. where he lettered in football and wrestling.
IronDawgs Arial Bulmash of Alpharetta and Svetlana Baker of Bogart also competed, as did 'Dawg Kyle Scott of Athens (results not immediately available). Bulmash also entered the Open Class in addition to her golden and record-setting performances in her 16-17 year old teen class.
