I woke up Wednesday morning convinced I had a terrible nightmare during the night. When I got the papers, I realized it in fact was real life, nonetheless still a nightmare.

President Obama had been re-elected to another 4-year term and gained some Senate seats to boot! OUCH! He might complete the transformation of our country to a complete welfare state in that time, raise taxes, cut benefits, make still more of our allies mad at us and who knows what else. Former President Georgian Jimmy Carter is probably dancing with joy that Obama has four more years to solidify the point that no longer is Carter known as the nation's worst president, preceded by Herbert Hoover and Warren Harding.

Brace yourselves for net higher taxes and fewer cherished deductions. They'll start kicking in after the new year and most all will be in place and operative by the end of 2014.
The only two bright spots were that the Democratic Senate is still not filibuster proof and Republicans kept control of the House.

Regardless of disappointment, we need to pray that he succeeds in governing and maybe that he'll surprise us and do better the next four years. While we're praying, we need to pray that the Republican Party comes to its senses and corrects its course before it makes itself irrelevant.

Especially the children of the Tea Party need to grow up and realize they can't have their way all the time. These need to realize they make themselves irrelevant when they insist on "It's my way or the highway." The way our Constitution was created and amended fewer than 30 times over our country's history purposely required principled compromise.

Democrats understand senators and representatives can range from liberal to conservative. Conservative Republicans do themselves a real disservice when they condemn those in their midst who (are somewhat liberal on some issues, are moderate or work in a bipartisanship way. For example, longtime Sen. Richard Lugar was very effective in working across the aisle to get needed legislation. His seat was safe from the Democrats. He was deemed "not conservative enough" and was defeated in the primary by a hard right candidate who lost big time to a Democrat in the general election. Longtime Sen. Orrin Hatch was targeted this year for working across the aisle. He had the audacity to work with super-liberal Ted Kennedy on education issues. Luckily for Republicans and America, he survived his challenger.

Most Democratic leaders have it really worked out. They realize they can't have their way all the time even when they're in a majority. They give a little to the opposition to get most of what they want. The minority gets something(s) important to them in exchange. Party control always changes every so often.. Principled compromise is not a political dirty word. Let's hope Obama has learned that from his presidential failures.

What did I mean about irrelevance? In short, our demographic profile is no longer as it once was.

Minorities are fast becoming a majority of our once majority white population. They consist of African Americans, Hispanic (legal and illegal), Indian and Asian. This profile and the way he handled it is what kept Romney from a substantial victory. Early in the campaign, he went after illegal aliens with a vengeance, even endorsing more of the expensive high barbed wire fences that so far has had little effect on illegal entrants and deporting even small children who were smuggled in with their parents.

When I was supporting my longtime friend Newt Gingrich's quest for the presidential nomination I wrote him a memo suggesting the following policy: Grant automatic citizenship if requested to the families of any illegal immigrants who were killed or permanent disabled in the American military service. That would include spouse, children siblings and parents. For survived military service give an automatic green card to the family for every year served toward the number required for citizenship. All the above would subject to cancellation and automatic deportation upon a felony conviction before being sworn in as a citizen.

Also, allow children under the age of 15 who were brought here illegally by their parents to remain with full credit for years of residence. All this would be a start to mending fences.

The irony of Hispanics voting overwhelmingly for Democrats is that Hispanic cultural values mirror white social values. Except for the inevitable criminal elements, Most Latinos have strong family and cultural values like most conservative whites. They oppose abortion except when the life of the mother is endangered, they are religious, (most are Catholic), they are hard workers who go on unemployment only if they can't find a job of any kind. They'll willingly fill jobs beneath their skill levels if none other are available instead of going on unemployment benefits. They'll do jobs so many white Americans won't touch because it's "beneath them."

Republicans ought to be recruiting and training them for leadership.

Many of the older Georgia population remember well when this was a one-party (Democrat) state. My were and I was. In college, I realized I really didn't share what I learned was the Democrat philosophy. Though I still was a registered Democrat, I split my ticket and voted for Dwight Eisenhower for president in the first election I was eligible to vote and never since have voted for a Democratic president though up to this last election I still split my ticket. This year is the first year I voted a straight party ticket down the line.

Until about 20-25 years ago, many Georgia counties had no formal Republican organizations. What leaders existed were primarily interested in getting the patronage benefits that came with the leadership such as naming postmasters and other appointments when Republicans held the presidency. Few people today know it but totally unexpectedly I was recruited in a roundabout way to a position where I became the one who led the initial surge in building the Georgia Republican party of today. With lots of help, we built the principles and organizational structure of today. I only recently realized that this is the first year since Reconstruction that Georgia held all statewide offices, control both houses of the legislature, both U.S. Senate seats and a solid majority of congressional seats.

I'll share with you sometime soon how we did it. I say we, for there was a lots of help from a lots of people. I only developed the strategy and led the way.
