STATHAM - In a close vote, Statham City Council members have decided to allow voters to determine whether to allow retailers to sell alcohol on Sundays.

According to reports in The Athens Banner Herald, the council voted 3-2 Tuesday to set a March 6 referendum date for Sunday retail sales of alcoholic beverages.

If voters okay the measure, stores in Statham will be able to sell beer and wine on Sundays no later than the end of March.

Retails stores in Barrow County and Auburn already are able to sell beer and wine on Sundays because voters there approved the change in November.
