GAINESVILLE - Hall County firefighters said no one was injured in an early morning fire Wednesday on East Hall Road.

Fire Chief David Kimbrell said the fire broke out just before 5:00 a.m. at the home in the 4500 block of East Hall Road.

He said the couple who lived at the home got out of the house because they were alerted by a smoke alarm.

"The preliminary cause [according to information] by our fire investigator appears to be a shorted-out space heater," said Kimbrell. "The space heater was on and operating; it shorted out and caused the fire."

Kimbrell said the 1200 square foot house, valued at around $120,000, suffered more than $60,000 in damage.

East Hall Road at Cedar Creek Road was closed for about two hours while firefighters worked at the scene.

He said the American Red Cross has been called to assist the occupants of the home.
