HOOVER, Ala. - Tea Party conservatives are rallying in support of Alabama's tough new law against illegal immigration.

About 120 people turned out in metro Birmingham on a rainy Tuesday evening for a demonstration in favor of the law.

A key sponsor of the bill, state Sen. Scott Beason, says it's the first event he knows of supporting the law.

Critics have staged several marches and rallies against the law.

Tea Party leader Van Green says the rally was timed to coincide with a federal judge's deliberations on whether the law is constitutional.

Speakers at the rally say the federal government isn't doing enough to enforce immigration laws, so Alabama has to do the job on its own.

Beason describes the law as a bill meant to protect jobs for legal Alabama residents.
