The GBI and Madison County Sheriff's Office arrested Timothy Irwin Lewis after an investigation into allegations of inappropriate sexual contact with a minor in Madison County.
"It's [the victim] a teenager, but under the age of 16 at the time of the incident," said GBI agent Jim Fullington.
Fullington said the GBI was asked to join the investigation, since the allegations were levied against a police officer.
Fullington said Lewis was not on duty at the time of the alleged incident. Lewis was arrested without incident Tuesday at the Royston Police Department.
