Tiffany Lommel, Director of School Nutrition and Food Services, presented the plan to the board.
Lommel told the board that the system has been approved for the program, known as Provision 2 Option of the Federal School Breakfast and National School Lunch Program, an option offered to districts with 75% or more its students eligible for free-reduced lunch.
Provision 2 is a four-year program that offers breakfast and lunch for all students without a charge to the student.
Lommel said this will reduce labor costs associated with collecting and processing meal applications, processing claims, verifications, and cashier operations. The board was told the higher meal participation rate will result in lower per-meal cost to the district. Other advantages are faster serving lines and improved meal selection. Letters and telephone messages will be sent to parents Tuesday informing them of the change.
SCHOOL BOARD TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
The board discussed the new school board training requirements outlined by the a State Department of Education Board rule set up to meet the mandates of Senate Bill 84.
Zenda Bowie from the Georgia School Boards Association presented information to the board to assist members in developing a training plan that would identify areas of training for the board as assessed in a needs survey. The board adopted a training plan in July and will amend that plan with more specifics when it meets again in two weeks.
