State climatologist David Stooksbury says this is the earliest in any year since records have been kept that Athens reached the 100th day mark. In 1925, the city had recorded 93 days of 90 or higher temperatures by September 2. In 1933 and 1931, it recorded 85 days of 90 or higher by September 2.
As for Gainesville, according to readings at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport, Friday was the 72nd day this year with a high of 90 or more.
Stooksbury reported last week that this has been the hottest summer on record in Georgia.
