G-Braves move into tie for postseason race with win

DURHAM, N.C. -- With one, win, the Gwinnett Braves put themselves back at the front of the postseason race on Monday.

Gwinnett defeated the first place Durham Bulls 2-1 in Durham, N.C., claiming its third game in a row and picking up a game in the International League South division standings. The G-Braves now trail the Durham Bulls by 2.5 games for the division lead, yet Gwinnett is also now tied for the IL wild card lead with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (76-62), which lost both games of a doubleheader against the Syracuse Chiefs Monday.

The G-Braves took the lead for good in the top of the sixth inning on Monday, when Mauro Gomez singled and drove in Ruben Gotay for a 2-1 advantage.

The run was enough for Gwinnett starter Todd Redmond, who earned his first win of the season against the Bulls. Redmond went 6 innings, allowing 1 run on 6 hits with 3 walks. Redmond also posted his second best strikeout total of the season with 9. Reliever Cory Gearrin also earned his fifth hold of the season, going 1 2/3 innings with a walk and 4 strikeouts. Jairo Asencio closed the game for the G-Braves, throwing 1 1/3 innings and earning his IL-leading 24th save of the season.

Gwinnett's Gomez displayed why he was named International Player of the week on Monday, going 3-for-3 at the plate with 2 RBIs, a walk and a double. Ruben Gotay also scored both runs for the Braves. Designated hitter Stefan Gartrell, Wilkin Ramirez, and Brandon Hicks also had hits for Gwinnett.

The G-Braves play their last game against the Durham Bulls in the regular season on Tuesday night in Durham, N.C at 7:05 p.m. The G-Braves send out Yohan Flande (8-8, 3.88) vs. Brian Baker (7-8, 6.27) for the Bulls.
