Shirreffs leads Jefferson to big win over Commerce

JEFFERSON -- Brian Shirreffs ran for two touchdowns and threw for two others in leading Jefferson to a 41-14 win over arch-rival Commerce Friday in both teams' season opener at Jefferson Memorial Stadium.

Shirreffs scored the first two touchdowns of the game on a pair 1-yard runs and then connected on a 30-yard TD pass to Will Puckett to give the Dragons (1-0) a 21-7 halftime lead.

Shirreffs would connect with Drequn Sewell on a 77-yard TD pass to open the second half to help Jefferson pull away. Shirreffs finished the game 10-for-13 passing for 220 yards. He also rushed six times for 32 yards. Sewell led the Dragons on the ground with 90 yards, while Cole Givens caught five passes for 125 yards.

Drew Carson helped put the game away for the Jefferson defense picking up a fumble and rumbling 67 yards for a defensive touchdown. Tristen Jackson closed the scoring for Jefferson with a TD run in the fourth quarter.

Commerce's two scores came on TD runs by Cody Streetman and Marquavius Little.

Streetman finished with 30 carries for 89 yards and 48 yards passing.
